A Personal Note from Joy:

PersonalNoteAudio

November was another busy month [I know I say that every month!], this time with my feet firmly planted on the ground rather than in Florida’s coastal waters.

My team and I have been privileged to be working on a number of opportunities with leaders of various companies. This is what we’ve been noticing: Companies do realize the importance of the Vision and the Plan – as this is all very important and the first step – yet what I see missing consistently is the Implementation and the Accountability –

This month’s Featured News is about seeing your plan all the way through. And yes, that does include implementation and accountability – while you’re enjoying the journey, of course!

This month’s Q&A is from Gretchen – looking for that elusive balance as she finishes up her goals and embraces the holidays too.

Comment from a pleased client this month:

“Thank you for being so giving of yourself and your wisdom. You are changing the world!”

As you begin to envision 2012, be sure to consider coaching now more than ever. And finally…this is the last time you’ll hear it this year: If you haven’t achieved your 2011 goals, don’t waste another year away – NOW is the time to finalize next year’s strategy with an expert and a system by your side!

Have an outstanding holiday month with those near and dear to you,

Joy-fully,

Implementation and Accountability

Have you ever been so excited about a vision for your business that you couldn’t wait to get started making it happen?

Have you ever built an unbreakable plan, got your strategy in place, and then as time passes you lose focus?

Sure the vision and plan need attention for success to occur, but without implementation of the plan, you will not see the results you desire.

How to see your plan all the way through, from vision to result:

1. Create a crystal clear vision. In order to see the end results, you need to become clear on what those results are going to look like. Where do you see your business in 3 months from now? 6 months? 1 year? 3 years? Determine how you want your business to run and where you see your success. The more detailed you are the better.

2. Transfer your vision into a plan. After you decide on your vision, you need to develop it into a plan. How are you going to get from A to B. Prioritize your vision based on what you need to implement now and what can wait. You are already clear on where you are now and where you want to finish, so what do you need to do to get there?

3. Create small and manageable goals. Breaking your plan into more manageable goals helps you stay on task. Set weekly goals to keep you focused or have a weekly “to do” list. When you have smaller goals, it feels easier to accomplish them, rather than a few large goals.

4. Devote attention to your plan. After you become clear on your plan don’t put it in a drawer and forget about it. Maintain your focus by putting it somewhere you can see – maybe up on your wall or on the back of your door. Once you find the perfect spot, schedule time each week to review your plan and how you are staying on task.

5. Find an accountability partner. Accountability is essential for making your vision a reality! Whether you hire a coach or have a business partner, find someone who will keep you on track. Having someone hold you accountable who is not attached to the outcome and so has an unbiased view, will help you implement your plan. Articulating your vision to this person helps both of you clearly understand your vision and how you see it unfolding, and what you need from them to help you succeed.

6. Celebrate your successes. To keep your motivation and implementation going strong, set up celebrations for your milestone attainment. You may want to schedule a small weekend trip or take a day off to keep you motivated and rejuvenated.

In order for your vision to become a reality, development and implementation of a plan are key.

As you begin to prepare for the New Year, instead of creating only a vision and a plan, create a strategy for making your plan happen. Adding an accountability resource from the beginning will keep you focused and on task throughout the entire process.

Q&A:

Q&A Audio

Q: I’m wondering how I can find a balance between completing my year-end goals and having a relaxing holiday season. I don’t want the stress that usually comes during the holidays.
―Gretchen, PA

A: This time of year can certainly cause stress for many. As the year winds down and the holiday season gets into full gear, you can often find yourself pulled in many directions.

In order to find the balance that you are seeking, you first need to know what that balance looks like.

Answer this question: If you were to have a peaceful yet productive end of the year and holiday, what would that be like?

Jot down your answer and make sure that you don’t tell yourself “it’s not possible”. Use this as a brainstorming session – any answer is a great answer!

Once you have your “ideal” picture complete, it is time to develop a plan.

What do you need to do to get as close to your ideal as possible?

What do you need to cut out of your schedule?

What are your priorities?

Make a plan based on your priorities and watch the pieces fall together. To help you stay on task, you may want to develop a weekly plan of attack to keep you focused and motivated throughout the remainder of the year.

Good luck and Happy Holidays!!

I appreciate your questions and am here to support you.

To Your Success,

A Personal Note from Joy:

PersonalNoteAudio

How have you been showing up as a Leader in your life? I was fortunate to work with many Leaders recently.

October was another busy month preparing and facilitating the L.I.F.E.™ presentation at a weekend Yoga retreat in northern MN, and guiding a mastermind group aboard the inaugural LeaderSHIP™ Journey in St. Pete’s, FL.

I continue to hear feedback about the value received when you’re surrounded by other Thought Leaders. It’s rewarding for me to notice how generous participants are with each other. And if you’re wondering if you’re a Thought Leader – yes, you are – you have unique gifts and experiences to share with the world. My hope is that each of you takes back the ‘nuggets’ you receive, and ‘pay it forward’ in your own community, in your own way.

This month’s Featured News is about what happens when life isn’t smooth sailing. On our LeaderSHIP Journey we had it all – calm seas, sunshine, engine breakdown, rain, and high winds – there were numerous adjustments and a lot of teamwork required to manage the seas.

This month’s Q&A is from Bin, about how to be happy and live a fulfilling life. It seems like such an elusive goal, yet one of my favorite comments I love to hear from clients is that they’re ‘peaced out’ or ‘grateful’ or ‘calm’, even when their life or business doesn’t necessarily look that way.

Comment from a pleased yoga participant:

“I have a quick vision board story to share. This morning I was struggling to get out of bed. I really wanted to go to my spin class, but was having trouble motivating myself. Then I saw my vision board and the words “Healthy Living” popped out. I immediately headed out to the gym. Thanks for adding the extra inner reflective dimension to this year’s retreat.”

As you begin to envision 2012, be sure to consider coaching now more than ever. If you haven’t achieved your 2011 goals, don’t waste another year away – NOW is the time to finalize next year’s strategy with an expert and a system by your side!

What Happens When Life Isn’t Smooth Sailing?

It happens, right?

You’re sailing along and everything is going smoothly, then wow – rough seas ahead! What do you do? Do you turn around and go back or do you decide to navigate through the storm?

No matter who you are or what kind of life you live, there are times when you need to “adjust your sails”. Whether you are facing a health crisis or are caught up in a corporate downsizing, the situation can cause you to readjust.

What happens when you look at the situation as a sailing metaphor, in this game called life? How does that change your perspective?

You do have options – you can: request support, ‘take down the sails’ and reflect on your best options, or jump into action and make immediate adjustments necessary to reach your destination.

When you are faced with an unexpected storm, it is perfectly normal to want to do all three. Give yourself permission to move in the direction of least resistance. Stress and panic usually don’t give you the clarity you need to move forward.

Q&A

Q&AAudio

Q: Hi Joy, How can I be happy with what I have and live a fulfilling life, at the same time?
Bin, California

A: Thanks Bin for the question!

One of the ways to live a fulfilling life might be to keep striving for and accomplishing your goals, so you can realize that sense of achievement. If you are feeling like you are no longer happy with the status quo and need to change things up a bit, there is nothing wrong with that!

Being happy with where you are while striving for something more can be challenging. It’s easy to long for something so much that you lose sight of what you already have. The key to remaining happy with where you are while reaching for your goals is to take notice.

How to be grateful for the now:

Be thankful. One of the most important steps in appreciating and loving where you are now is to be thankful. Take the time each day to look at your life, focusing on gratitude. You might want to start a morning or evening journal where you can write 5 things you are thankful for. Watch how this simple action quickly changes your thinking.

Set goals. If you find yourself living the status quo with no clear goals or sense of achievement, then change it. What do you want to be doing? Where can you spend your time that makes you feel happy? Maybe you want to volunteer your time somewhere?

Notice your accomplishments. Just like the gratitude journal, take the time to notice what you are accomplishing. Look back on your life and notice where you’ve been and how far you’ve come. Feel the achievement and acknowledge what you’ve already created.

Remember, only you can control your happiness – nobody can do it for you. Our brains are very powerful and can keep us in a pattern of unhappiness without even knowing. Take the steps and slowly watch the changes.

I appreciate your question and am here to support you.

To Your Success,

Did you begin gearing up for the arrival of fall during September? Now that the fourth quarter is here, let’s maximize your success together! Let me know how I can create or support your goals and strategies.

The International Coach Federation conference in Vegas went well, for the most part. I’ll talk more about it below, but one thing is for sure, business owners and young coaches are starving for laser focused content with an expert by their side. An attendee who was walking by, stopped and stared at my banner –his brother had told him to ‘Aim High’ at the conference. He is a business owner who could use help with business strategy, and that is a big passion of mine. I am excited to begin working with him. Don’t you love synchronicities?

In response to the need for more focused direction for business leaders, I’ll be sending out a weekly newsletter. My intention is to provide you with more tools and proven resources to help you make money in your business. Look for my newsletter to arrive weekly into your inbox!

This month’s Featured News is: Tired of Spending Money on the Next Best Program? It’s time to work with an expert and proven resources to clarify and reach the goals that will truly make you feel like a Leader!

This month’s Q&A is a question from Carol who’s feeling the frustration and wants to move to the next level. I’ve coached many on this one!

Feedback from a pleased client this month:

“The value of our coaching is Joy’s reinforcement of consistently moving forward what we’ve got going in my company, and not allowing me to pull any punches. Making certain I keep my feet to the fire has truly been invaluable.”

As you begin to wrap up 2011 be sure to consider coaching now more than ever. Don’t waste another year away, or even these final months of 2011 – NOW is the time to finalize your strategy with an expert and system by your side!

Have an outstanding month,

Tired of Spending Money on the Next Best Leadership Program?

As I stated above, I recently participated in the International Coaching Federation’s annual conference. For the most part my experience was great. I met some really wonderful people and enjoyed the energy and passion throughout the event.

However, there was one key experience that led to frustration. There were several coaching companies at the conference that were exhibiting their coaching training or certification program. For those of you who know me, you know that I love competition, so this is not what led to my frustration. When I became frustrated was when I noticed what was not being offered.

For a business to succeed, whether it is a coaching business or any business for that matter, there needs to be a strong foundation! Many of these programs, although they may have great training tools, they are not teaching coaches the next level in what they need to build their business – knowing how to make money!

Passion is one part of creating a business, but the other part is being able to create a business built on solid, proven principles! Many programs are lacking this essential step.

If you are tired of spending money on the next best program, read my entire experience here: http://speedtoadvancement.com/2011/corporate-leadership/get-rid-of-cookie-cutter-coaching-companies-once-and-for-all

Q&A

10-11-Q&AAudio

Q: Hi Joy,

I often find myself aggravated with the progress I’m making in my business. I feel I have a great service to provide, but I can’t seem to move to the next level. I’m not really sure where to go from here?

Carol in PA

A: Hi Carol, thanks for the question. First of all, know that you are not alone! I often receive this question and can hear the pain in your words. It is not easy to build a successful business, and there are a few key steps that need to be in place for you to truly succeed.

Understand Your Why: One step that allows successful businesses to stand out in a crowd is knowing your why, and I don’t mean only the why of making money! Making money is a result of knowing your why. There are many businesses out there that can offer the same product or service, but the ones that are clear on their intention of “why”, will succeed at a higher rate. When you become clear on your why, your message will naturally follow.

Speak to Your Audience: After you understand your why, you will know your audience. Many experts talk about having an ideal customer or client. This is key in developing a successful business. If you don’t know who you are speaking to, no one will be listening. Each and every message or promotion you develop should be speaking to this ideal audience.

Build a Strong Foundation: When you understand your why and speak to your audience, you will be well on your way to building your strong foundation. Remember, nothing can be built to last if it doesn’t have a foundation that is sturdy!

So what’s your why, I’d love to hear it?

I appreciate all of your questions and am here to support you with your business building needs. If you are looking for additional support or tools for growing your business, please contact me. I look forward to helping you build a solid foundation.

To Your Success!

I’ve been out in the marketplace finding out more about what you’re looking for as advancement opportunities in your life and in your business. I’m also finalizing our certified coaching training to present at the ICF Conference in Vegas. I am looking forward to meeting many coaches and business owners. If you’re attending the event be sure to stop by Booth #213!

September is the season of gearing up for new change―almost feels like January, when we’re beginning a new year. Keep me in mind when you’re ready to add coaching as an additional support to finish 2011 strong.

This month’s Featured News is 3 Tips to Gearing Up For the Arrival of Fall. Yes you know I love to talk to you about your goals, and the upcoming fall season is the perfect opportunity.

This month’s Q&A is from Mark, a new business owner who has a question about getting his programs market-ready. Some business owners tend to take a lot on…is that you?

Feedback from a business owner client this month: “Working with Joy was a great experience!
As you continue to step up YOUR life in 2011 be sure to consider coaching now more than ever, as a way to eliminate 2-3 steps on your ladder to success!

3 Tips to Gearing Up For the Arrival of Fall

With the end of summer closing in and the arrival of fall on your front doorsteps, you may be feeling a rush of motivation. Typically, this time of year, leaders and business owners find themselves gearing up for change. With the cooler temperatures comes a desire to make those goals for the year happen.

So how do you prepare yourself for that beginning of fall rush?

1. Find Your Goals for the Year

During the summer, you may have found yourself taking much needed time to rejuvenate and replenish your reserves. Summer is a great time to make this happen. Now that you took some time for self care, bring out your goals. Some of you may need to dust them off a bit. Don’t worry about it, just bring them out.

2. Re-Evaluate Your Goals

Fall is a great time of year to re-evaluate the goals you made. Take a look at the goals and your action steps you created for yourself. Notice where you are on your accomplishments. Some of them may need a little tweaking and some you may have already checked off your list.

Do what you need to do to get your goals and action steps clear and attainable for the rest of the year. Don’t forget to write your steps using the Gap System. http://joypecchia.com/blog/goal-setting

3. Keep Up the Motivation

After you have your goals in tip top shape, keep your motivation going. You have already laid the foundation to make your year a success. Now is the time to execute your plan. Re-visit why you created the goals for this year and why they are important to you. If you took them off of your mirror or took down your vision board, maybe it’s time to put them back up. Find the routine that you know keeps you motivated and make it a priority!

Remember to keep those action steps at 90 days, so you don’t feel overwhelmed or unmotivated. Because it is September, those 90 days will get you through to the end of November. So, prepare yourself to end your year with a bang!

Q&A

Sept2011Q&A

Q: Hi Joy, I’m optimistic about moving forward with a new business and programs. I have six different services I want to provide and I’m wondering if that’s too much since I’m just getting started. What are your thoughts?

—Thanks, Mark from Colorado.

A: Hi Mark! Optimism is a good thing when starting a new business! And it might not be a problem to be offering six different services – yet if you’re creating them all at the same time that could be a problem. Why? Because it’s keeping you away from conversations in your marketplace.

These days it’s easy to hide behind a computer or virtual office. When you’re gearing up in business, now is the perfect time to be out networking and asking for feedback, rather than be creating from what I call a ‘closed system’ – you, your ideas and your computer.

Mark, this is what I would recommend over the next 90 days:

Decide on the top two programs that you could begin marketing immediately to your ‘low hanging fruit’. Let your prospects’ feedback help you finalize those two programs, the programs don’t need to be 100% complete before you start marketing them. By paying attention to what your prospects say they want, you’ll be able to finalize your first two programs — and they’ll probably give you helpful ideas when you’re ready to consider the next program. Spending time on what current prospects and/or clients want next is a big win for your business, and makes good marketing sense.

Clarity and focus are extremely important to you right now as you’re getting started. It’s easy to get caught up in the ‘next bright shiny object syndrome’ or another ‘thought leader recommendation’ that’s not necessarily right for you at the time. You know your business and what your target market wants (or you should!). In this world of complexity, look for the simplicity as that will keep you in action.

Create your action plan for those two programs Mark – what do you specifically need to schedule in your calendar so that your days and weeks are super focused. Believe me, if I didn’t have the crystal clarity that my schedule provides, my outcomes would be very different, and not in a good way!

Let me know if you need additional support on deciding your top two programs and I’ll send you my Decisive Action System™, because not making a decision – is still making a decision – make sense?

To Your Success!

A Personal Note From Joy:

Personal Note

It’s finally summer here in Minnesota! We had fun with family visiting, and it was also a busy month with coaching, presentations and workshops.

Many of you know I’m a believer in Vision Boards, and last August [I update my vision board every 3 years] my new vision board had a picture of a pontoon plane. Lucky me! There was an opportunity for a ride while we were all together at my brother’s lake home. Here I am getting ready for a fun ride with my nieces from California – we loved it!
This month’s Featured News was based on a conversation I had with my son Ben, home for a visit from college which gave me the idea to write about our young, emerging leaders.
My Q&A Section this month is a question from Ellen about having a power struggle with her 5 year old. As I know many of you are parents, I thought you might find this helpful.

Feedback from happy workshop participants this month: “The workbook content was very helpful and all of the exercises and interactions were extremely beneficial. Joy’s knowledge, tips and energy was great. I would highly recommend Joy!”

Welcome July Clients:

Our Young, Emerging Leaders

I’m feeling compelled to write about our emerging leaders after a recent visit with my son, Ben. He is in college and going to summer school out of state and is working part time, so I haven’t had the opportunity to sit down and chat with him very often.

What he said was so interesting and compelled me to write this Featured News today. I hope it has you reflect, and assess, on how you can make a difference with these young, emerging leaders. – Joy

Not everyone necessarily agrees on a description of emerging leaders, yet there is agreement on the significance in them redefining the future of organizations, and of society. This is a different generation.

Commit to the Development of Emerging Leaders. There are young, emerging leaders entering the workforce. They are disillusioned with the trillion dollar debt and the inept ways our government is attempting to resolve it, not to mention the greed running rampant in our society. These young leaders have a lot to offer. Please consider the importance of including this new generation of leaders into your organization.

Living by Your Values? These emerging leaders have an enormous interest in values, how you live by them, and what to do if you’re expected to disregard your own principles in the workplace.

Ben has had managers in the past who have been fired for stealing or for other ‘out of integrities’. Ben has been talking differently about his current boss (who unfortunately just resigned). Ben loved the ideas his boss came up with and how fair he was, and how he was very respectful with both the employees and the customers. His boss was a great role model for Ben, and I’m very glad he had the opportunity to work with someone like that – at 20 years old, I think it was the first time Ben had worked for a boss whom he respected.

These young leaders are hungry to follow intelligent, authentic, trustworthy leaders. I am hoping that defines you.

Empower the Company Systems with Emerging ‘Thought Leader’ Ideas. These emerging leaders are also thought leaders. Support them by creating programs or products where they can offer their ideas and make a significant contribution towards the success of the company’s bottom line. As with most any employee, allowing them to have a hand in creating the process gives the buy-in and true commit to seeing it all the way through.
Emerging Leaders Are the Future. Our emerging leaders are in a new age, living with enormous change and uncertainty. I see a new generation of leaders occurring at every level—mission-focused, values-based, and demographics-driven. They see the future because they are the future, as hard as it is to define.

They are a new breed, a new generation, different from many of the earlier leaders. In the darkness of our times, they “shine a light,” as Jim Collins would say.

Mentoring is a Leadership Privilege. Mentoring is highly circular, you learn as much from young leaders as they do from you. Support them, cheer them on, and, in the end, follow them, for they are our leaders of the future. These emerging leaders want to be heard, and they truly do have a lot to teach us.

The conversation with Ben made me even more aware that their generation has been raised in a ‘flat’ world, and he would not hesitate to move across the globe, not just across the country.

“To serve is to live” is not an unfamiliar phrase to these young leaders. They are volunteering, serving in amazing ways—not waiting until they are 50 to begin changing lives, including their own. Let’s not lose our young, enterprising youth to other cultures. Let’s create opportunities for them to want to make a difference here in the US.

Q&A:

Q&Aaudio

Q: I had a power struggle with my five year old daughter this morning which got me off on the wrong foot for the rest of the day. How do people isolate so well?
―Ellen, California

A: Hi Ellen, great question, and I’m sure that many of the ezine readers who have children can relate to the good ol’ power struggle. I can say that lightly, now that my children are young adults; yet I can certainly remember some struggles.
What you’re really talking about here Ellen is managing your state. Right now, you’re letting a situation manage you, and that doesn’t feel very empowering. It’s really all about taking your power back, and here are some ways others have learned do that and to isolate a negative situation, and you can too:

Acknowledge You’re Not Perfect and that you may actually act like a 5 year old yourself some days. And it’s ok – acknowledge it and let it go.

Create a Capture List. When you are in a neutral state, write down all the ways you can respond to your 5 year old daughter, other than having a power struggle. This is your ‘capture list’, capturing any ideas you have of ways you can take different action in the future. This way, when a power struggle happens again (and it probably will), you’ll have already come up with some empowering resources that will be available to you.

Be Present. If this situation negatively affects you throughout your day, you’re not very present. Take some deep breaths, go out for a walk, listen to your favorite music, watch a funny movie, and continue on with your day feeling good about all the great times you’ve shared with your 5 year old daughter.

Remember The Magic Moments. What were some of your magic moments together, what did she do that made you both laugh so hard you cried, what made you feel really proud, what are you truly grateful for? You do get what you focus on, so reflect on all of the positives and allow those to help you create a fantastic day.

Apologize and Forgiveness. When things have simmered down, go back and apologize for what you said and did. Hugs are always good, and so are fun activities to do together.

It’s easy to let situations get the best of us. The more you exercise your ‘being present’ muscle, the less a situation will affect your whole day. 5 year olds are very forgiving, remember to forgive yourself too.

Keep in mind she is the next generation of Emerging Leaders. Model your family values and respect. Let her make her own decisions when possible so she’s comfortable with making decisions when she’s out in the world. Let her experience that it’s ok to make mistakes.

PS. Be sure to enjoy a wonderment of a 5 year old – they grow up so very fast!

Joy
