Personal Note From Joy

Sept-2010-Personal-Note
Hi there,

We celebrated the Labor Day Holiday weekend in the US, it seems to be the official start of the fall season. I enjoyed taking my kayak out on the lake and noticed the colors already starting to change. I’m excited to move into another brand new season, ripe with opportunities as the momentum usually swings into high gear this time of year.

As you step up YOUR life in this new season be sure to consider coaching now more than ever, as a way to eliminate 2-3 steps on your staircase to success.

In September’s Featured News you’ll find an article I wrote for a column in a Seattle Lifestyle Magazine about contribution. Just recently, a client of mine has finalized a life-long dream of his — creating a foundation for youth in his area with the intent to help them attend post secondary education and obtain either a two or four year college degree. In addition, he’s running a half marathon [a big stretch and another dream of his] as another avenue to raise funds. How about you? Start moving forward in your game of life. Making a contribution is truly one of the most fulfilling ways to live your life, which is why I offer a Leave Your Legacy System as a proven system and technology in coaching clients to live outstanding, fulfilled lives.

There’s also a Q&A Column this month featuring John in California. He notices that his response to situations has a negative spin and he’d like to turn that around. (Be sure to submit your questions for future blogs!)

Have an amazing month!

Featured News:

Sept-2010-Featured-News
Considerations in Giving

According to the website of Volunteering in America, Seattle ranks 4th in volunteering in the large city category. The data states the following:

There are 943,600 volunteers in the Seattle area.

34.9 percent of residents volunteer—ranking Seattle behind Minneapolis-St. Paul, Portland and Salt Lake City.

$2.5 billion worth of service is being contributed by volunteers.

The volunteer retention rate in Seattle is 73.9 percent compared to the national rate of 65 percent.

(In fact, despite the current economic downturn the number of volunteers increased nationally by 1.6 million from 2008 to 2009.)

Two Different Approaches…

Consider these two Seattle-related giving-back situations:

Along with Warren Buffet, Seattle native, Bill Gates, initiated The Giving Pledge. This is a commitment from fellow billionaires to donate most of their wealth to philanthropic causes of their choice.

One Seattle-based non-profit, See Your Impact, features specific needs and shows donors the impact of their micro-donation.

Two Great Results!

While the billionaires pledge their enormous wealth to worthwhile causes, See Your Impact’s website posts small targeted funding requests to help reduce poverty world-wide.

For example, their website asks potential patrons to give $15 for a back-to school kit for a kindergarten aged Columbian child. The kit contains a new backpack, notebooks, paper, pencils, watercolors, brushes, crayons and a toothbrush.

One of the backbone concepts of See Your Impact is that people want to see where their gift goes. They want to know the impact it has. So, soon after the money is disbursed to a See Your Impact recipient, the donor receives a photo or video of the recipient.

Who Gives?

There are many theories as to why Seattle gives back. But it all comes back to why anyone gives. As a local Seattle business woman, Alice Cunningham, stated when profiled in Seattle Woman:

“You get to a certain age when you’re no longer a guest, but a host on the planet.”

So, it’s no surprise that because of their sheer numbers and where they are at on the life continuum that baby boomers lead the way in volunteering and giving. But the Millennials (those born after 1982) are no shirkers either. In fact, 10.8 Millennials dedicated 1.1 billion hours worth of service across the country in 2009.

It’s Not Easy

As rewarding as it is, and as easy as it may seem to do, giving, like any noble task takes work. Five considerations when deciding to donate either money or time include:

Whether it is animals, poverty, illness or whatever, discover an issue you care about.

Research your interests and charities on the internet. Educate yourself about the group and the way it goes about achieving its goals.

Act out of boldness about supporting your causes. Many more people rue missed opportunities than regret having given.

Make sure you are comfortable financially about giving. Earmark the money in your budget and do not overextend yourself.

Shout about your cause from the rooftops! Not to draw attention to yourself but to encourage other people to also give (maybe even to your charity!).

We are all both guests and hosts during our brief sniff of life on this planet. Let graciousness reign over the way we accept and the way we give back.
____________________________________________________________________________________

Q & A Question

Sept-2010-QA

I’ll be taking questions from you each month that will appear in future ezines. Please submit a comment with your question and look for my responses in a future ezine blogs.

Q: Hey Joy, I’ve noticed that when I hear the same news as my wife, many times I’ll have a negative reaction to the same news that she responds to positively. I’d like to know why I do this and how I can change it. Thanks,

–John, California

A: Hi John,

You might have heard the expression ‘glass half full’ or ‘mismatcher’ or ‘optimistic’ as a way to describe how people respond to what they experience.

Many of my clients get caught up in the ‘why’ when it’s a negative response. Asking ‘why do I do that’ or ‘why can’t I react positively’ is simply asking your brain to give you all the reasons why your negative thoughts are true. Your brain answers any question you ask it, so it will answer a negative question with a negative response. And then people make up a story, something like ‘see, I can’t change’ or ‘it’s just who I am’, or [fill in the blank]. A negative question just builds roots and reinforces your negative behavior.

So let’s look at a few ways on how you can change it:

Ask a positive question like ‘what can I learn from this’ or ‘what’s great about responding differently right now’ or [fill in the blank].

Focus on responding positively. For example, now that you are aware of the situation, you can make a different choice. Before you might have been responding negatively automatically…there was an outside ‘trigger’ and you automatically did the ‘negative thing’. Now that you’re aware, you must consciously make a different choice. Decide how you can choose to respond instead, write it down, and that will be a resource for you now and in the future.

Ask your wife for support. People need others in their environment to support their new beliefs, rules and behaviors. Let your wife know how you’d like her to specifically support you when this negativity shows up in the future.

Changing behaviors happens very effectively through a strong coaching process. I work at a deep, inner level with clients so their outside behaviors change. My proven systems and technologies get results.

John, start with these steps and let me know how you’re doing.

See you next month!

Joy

“You can become the expert in your area of interest over time and with a specific, measureable plan.” Joy Pecchia

Read a book about something other than sports. Attend your next local Orchestra Hall symphony event instead of another evening in front of the tv. Take a walk or a bikeride instead of getting in your car.

Better yet, change a habit you wish you didn’t have. A habit of doing depression; having angry outbursts; or using food, alcohol or drugs to control your moods or feelings.

Not only can it be done, in many cases it must be done for you to live a fulfilling life.

It is very tough to do because of this: As we go through life, we act as though we know how our minds work and why we behave the way we do. It’s surprising how often we have no clue.

Even though that may be true, here are five ways to trick your mind into changing:

Write it Down or Type it In: Every one of us has made rising out of bed pronouncements like: I’m going to make a change today. Unfortunately, as we all know, that is not enough. Write the goal down. Set a start and end date of not more than 90 days. Note why it’s a must for you to achieve the goal, acknowledge what the obstacles are and what any triggers to relapse might be.

Be Focused: Often, after a change we lose enthusiasm without allowing time for the new habit to become a part of your life. Give it at least thirty days before reassessing, and be as consistent as you can in following the necessary steps to achieving your goal.

Stay committed: One way to maintain focus is to initially look at your goals every day and log your progress in a journal. This keeps your mind focused on the goal. It also allows you to chart your progress. Sometimes it’s difficult for clients to see their progress when they’re in the game. Reading your journal allows you to be more objective in your life and acknowledge how far you’ve come.

Shout it From the Rafters: Let everyone in your inner circle know about your plan. Let them know how they can specifically support you in achieving your goals. Maybe you want them to ask you a question or send you an email to check in – let them know what it is that you need. It’s critical that you set yourself up to have people in your environment who want to support you in being great. This journey is not meant to travel alone.

Create a Supportive Environment: Spend time in your favorite environment — a favorite room or chair in your home, outside at a nearby park, hiking in the mountains or surfing the waves. And a question for you: Does the environment you spend most of your time in appeal to you? Be sure to surround yourself with favorite photos or artwork, listen to your favorite music, paint a new color that feels good to you, those kinds of things. Remember that sometimes it’s the small things that give you the biggest result.

And a question for you: Does the environment you spend most of your time in appeal to you? Be sure to surround yourself with favorite photos or artwork, listen to your favorite music, paint a new color that feels good to you, those kinds of things. Remember that sometimes it’s the small things that give you the biggest result.

These strategies help leverage your total commitment to the changes. Don’t worry about thinking you might appear silly if you falter. Just keep at it and remember your commitment. It is much easier to make changes when you have a reliable support system. It’s just about impossible to change without one. Surround yourself with others who care about you and who want you to be great.

–Robert, Shanghai

P.S. I’m not originally from China so my passion can create even more of an issue for me as everything gets treated strictly as a business transaction over here.

A: Hi Robert, I think it’s great that you have a lot of passion! We need people like you to be really engaged in life. And sometimes when there’s too much passion (especially when it’s not culturally acceptable), you can get in your own way of success, even more so if you’re over-reacting because you’ve become emotionally attached.

Life and situations are constantly evolving and shifting, that’s the nature of the world we live in. When you’re emotionally attached you may be less flexible and responsive to change. When you’re passionate and committed, you will always find a way. I’ve noticed that passionate people have the stick-to-itiveness to stay true to their outcome, even when winds shift along the way.

Many times I find that clients miss the ‘due diligence’ or ‘research’ process when they’re so passionate. Robert, practice taking the time to break your pattern by choosing different actions – maybe you’re going to be more self-reflective, or gather more data online or speak with other experts – changing or paying attention to how you make passionate choices will support getting the outcome you want. Utilizing my Decisive Action System™ also offers you a strong structure in creating new habits.

There may be times in your life when being such a passionate guy is totally appropriate and you’re ‘all in’ — moving at a fast pace and getting great results. And there may also be times when you want to take a step back and reassess the situation first before taking action, especially when you’re in situations where the stakes are high.

Share your passion with others Robert, and adjust your sails along the journey.

See you next month!

Q & A Column

Q&A-july-2010

I’ll be taking questions from you each month that will appear in future ezines. Please submit a comment with your question and look for my responses in a future ezine blogs.

Q: Hey Joy, what ideas do you have for better communication? I’m in leadership roles in my life and always want to improve in this area. Thanks,

–Jonathan, Massachusettes

A: Hi Jonathan, thanks for asking, as this is a conversation I often have with my clients. I talk about how “communication is based on the response that you get.” And in addition to that, relationships are so important to people, and when there is no communication, there is no relationship, period.

Here are a few tools to become an expert in communication – Top 3 Tools In Creating Leadership Communications. There are three emotional states to focus on when you’re in communication:

See yourself as Inferior. The person you’re in communication has had different experiences in their life that you haven’t had, so they are superior to you in those areas. Follow their pace to build rapport. Listen thoughtfully, ask quality questions.

See yourself as Equal. Based on what you learned in #1, create the communication around similar likes or interests. It’s important to first see where you are an Inferior or an Equal with the other person to create rapport, connection and respect with them. And you can’t be a leader if you’re only seen as an Inferior or an Equal, so the next tool is equally as important:

See yourself as Superior. Communicate based on what you are Superior in, not from an ego or significance mindset, rather you’re sharing with them [based on paying attention to what you learned about them from the Inferior or Equal role] based on your expertise or knowledge base so you can find where you can make a contribution to them. They will naturally want to make a contribution to you.

Jonathan, when you are choosing to be a Leader in your life, one of the secrets is to create an emotion of respect. Communication from a respectful mindset will get you the results you’re looking for.

See you next month!

Featured News

Check-the-facts

Dig In and Get the Facts

Many of us rely on internet, newspapers, television, and radio news to find out about what is happening throughout the world. Unfortunately, along with factual and informative reports, are a large number of stories based on slanted facts or lies. The stories can certainly be entertaining and do support the media business’ ROI, yet when you believe these stories to be the truth, you can come away with a picture of the world in a very slanted way. Greece seemed to be an example of that.

Stanley Milgram’s Law – People Blindly Believe the Words of An Expert, may be at play here. Milgram was in search of some deeper explanation of social obedience – which can lead to normally rational, well-intentioned people, folding under peer pressure. This can have a significant effect into how we respond to and believe our news sources, especially when the majority of our culture seems to blindly follow along.

The Importance of Knowing Your Sources

Quality sources form the foundation of any good article, and the ability to judge quality comes with experience.

1. Get to the source. You’re more likely to get accurate answers to your in-depth questions if you ask to interview the experts themselves.

2. Understand angles. Whether it’s a person, publication or organization, take into account any biases that might be in play. Most writers are aware of this but fail to dig further when a bit of this information supports a claim or falls in line with their personal beliefs.

3. Ask for proof. Even if the source is well-respected, ask for documentation to support their facts. Just because someone says it’s so, that doesn’t make it so. The question is, can they prove it, and will they prove it for you?”

4. Avoid off-the-record discussions. Integrity comes from due diligence and research. Keep digging until you know you can trust the facts.

Q: Hi Joy, I’ll be traveling a lot over the next few months and even though I don’t like to admit it, I’m not that comfortable flying. Do you have any recommendations?

–John, California

A: Hi John, the summer season is the busiest season for travel, and it’s not uncommon for my clients or their friends/family members to get anxious when they’re preparing to travel.

It’s time to change your way of thinking. It is estimated that as much as 20% of the population suffers from some form of aerophobia or fear of flying. It is an irrational fear that can prevent people from further career advancement, keeping in touch with friends and family, and traveling throughout the world.

I’ve created a Fear of Flying audio to listen to before any flight that specifically conditions you to reduce or eliminate any fear or anxiety you may have about flying.

Click on the link below so you can learn to manage your fears and enjoy the ride.

Hi John,

Congratulations on that opportunity. I know you love the Expat life, especially since you’ve had an experience of working overseas in the past with your six year relocation to Singapore. Sounds like you’re ready to make a more thoughtful decision than writing it on a napkin and moving the next week on a whim. You’re more mature in your decision making process now, anticipating your consequences before taking decisive action and I’m happy to guide you in seriously considering another overseas assignment. Let’s talk about it from a fresh perspective, from where you are in your life right now.

I’ll share with you some processes I use in my Decisive Action System™ that allows my clients to get out of overwhelm in making a big decision, and stay focused on your priorities and outcomes.

First, decide what your Outcome is in making this move.

How would you learn and make a contribution?

What are you really committed to here?

What is the result you’re looking for?

What is the Purpose in making this new decision?

What are you passionate about when you consider this move?

What do you need to focus on to work smarter, not harder?

What new experiences excite you?

How will your life be different?

What about this move supports your long term goals?

What is your Evidence that this decision is right for you?

What are the rewards and/or consequences?

How will you know?

Is it important for you to generate a new network of peers, activities outside of work, vacations back home?

What are your Options in making this decision?

Create 3-5 choices

If you only have two options, that’s not a choice; it’s an ‘either/or’ dilemma, and it’s hard to move forward when there’s an unconscious ‘dilemma’ in the way of your success.

John, contact me for the next 3 steps in making your best, most informed decision so you never have to look back and wonder…what if…!!
