And yes, I’m back from Puerto Rico. Many of you know how much I loved it there, and I wrapped up that extended stay with a beautiful visit to the sandy beaches of St. Barth’s.

…And then home to Minnesota, to this stack
of packed boxes in my condo, getting ready
for my next move.

Life is full!

Q: My wife and I have young children and it’s been really hard to get
back to the passion we had in our relationship before our children were born.
Could you give me a couple of suggestions that my wife and I
could work with. I don’t like the future I’m seeing. Thanks Joy.

A: Hi Kent, Teamwork and trust are so important when couples become a family unit. Now, more than ever, it’s important to keep the flame of romance and passion going. No matter where you are in your relationship, you can always take actions to improve the current state between you and your partner.

Kent, here are some ideas for you to bring back the passion:

• Express admiration for her in front of others
• Think back on when you first met your wife and fell in love
• Remember that marriage is similar to a leadership team
• Lay down your weapons – ask yourself if this is a situation where I want to attack or use good intentions.
• Brainstorm 5-7 things you can do to show your wife that you truly love her. Do you kiss her passionately when you leave for work or come home? Do you plan periodic “date time” where it’s just the two of you?
• If you can’t think of anything you can do to show her love, ask her to give you specific ideas. Remember, it’s not what you think she wants. It’s what she actually wants!

And Kent, decide when you’ll complete these actions. Make this a part of your calendar as you would for any assignments that you may have for work, other activities, etc.

And by the way, here are a few things NOT to do:

• Don’t take an in law’s opinion over your wife’s
• Don’t play your children against her
• Don’t have major arguments in front of the children

Relationships are so much about partnership, and that becomes even more important when you are a family unit.

Take one action today Kent, and begin rebuilding that momentum to a passionate relationship!
